Happy Watermelon Day Ravens!

Summer got you feeling thirsty? Craving something sweet? Why not have something hydrating, sweet, and healthy – like Watermelons? Watermelons are over 90% water and are in season until September! So if you can, make sure to enjoy this refreshing fruit?

Not sure how to pick a good watermelon? Follow these tips to choose the best, sweetest, and juiciest watermelon at the supermarket:

  1. Select a firm, symmetrical watermelon without bruises, dents or cuts. Lumps and bumps could cause the watermelon to taste dry and chalky.
  2. For a sweeter watermelon, try a round watermelon. For a more watery one, try the elongated watermelon.
  3. There should be an orange-yellow spot on the watermelon, this ground spot should not be white or bright yellow. The paler the spot, the less sweet the watermelon!
  4. Look for a dry stem for a ripe watermelon. Green stems means the watermelon is not ripe!
  5. Avoid shiny watermelons. The best watermelons will have a rind with a dark green color, and the skin will be dull in appearance.

Did you know that… all parts of the watermelon are edible? Including the rind? Yes! When cooked, the rind can help improve circulation and relax blood vessels! You can cut up and cook the rind to use in a stir-fry. It will have a zucchini-like texture when cooked, and a slight sweet taste.

Less WASTE, more TASTE!
