This week, hundreds of farmers, agricultural associations, and individuals passionate about Canada’s agricultural industry convened in Ottawa for the annual Canadian Agricultural Day conference. Carleton Dining Services wanted to bring a piece of Canadian Agricultural Day to campus and partnered up with organizations from across the country to celebrate Canadian Grains Day in our caf. Our caf utilizes Canadian grains on a daily basis to prepare everything from pizza to pastries. Canadian Grains Day served as an opportunity to educate students about Canada’s cutting edge grain industry while simultaneously introducing them to some of the people who help make their meals possible.

Farmers and representatives from the Alberta Wheat Commission, Grain Farmers of Ontario, and Cereals Canada participated, providing a national scope to the event. The Alberta Wheat Commission highlighted the foundational role grains play in so many of our dishes with their “Life’s Simple Ingredients” campaign. Local farmers were in attendance as well. Jeanette and Michel Dignard traveled from their farm in Embrun, ON, located about 35 km from campus, to share their love for agriculture.

Our culinary team prepared linguine pasta from scratch, using Canadian semolina flour. While students lined up for the linguine carbonara dish, grain farmers had the opportunity to chat with students and answer their questions about agriculture.
